Even The Best Sermons Can Become Baby Food

Assuming you are a contemporary, Evangelical Christian, you would have your favourite preachers – I do. I love spending time, looking up their latest sermon videos, audios or transcripts. What if I told you that your favourite sermon was as helpful as a bottle of mother’s milk given to a teenager for her lunch?

cerelac, baby food, Grow in God's word day by day!, Maturity need not come 20 years from now, disciples of Jesus vs. disciples of sermons, Teaching is not just for pastors, its for all Christians, discipleship, Thankful for pastors but lets not idolize their work, a church full of infants can serve none, Church as one family, Marg, identity, local church
This bottle is full of Marg sermons!

Baby food can never sustain adults.

That crackling John MacArthur sermon, that Romans 8 sermon by Vivek Jones, the latest Francis Chan video that blew your mind away – one would never compare these works to Cerelac! How can someone downgrade sermons by great men of God?

To understand this, let us look at a portion of the letter to the Hebrews in the Bible:

1. There were things in the Bible that this church was unable to understand. “About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing”(Heb 5:11). Timely Biblical teaching and growth were being undermined because of their immaturity.

2. All Christians were expected to teach one another, but were instead only learning. It doesn’t say “those of you pastors, ought to be teachers”, but “you ought to be teachers” (Heb 5:12).

3. The reason this church community was immature was that they were unskilled in handling God’s Word. “for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child”(Heb 5:13).

Do you feel strongly convicted by online sermons, but rarely from your own study time in the Bible?

Can’t wait for Marg Sunday to get your spiritual kick? But did Jesus wait for sermons to learn about God?

Remember, he was not just fully God, but fully human too. Jesus did his homework in spiritual disciplines! I was reminded of this in a recent discussion with an older man in the faith who was thankful that his mentor asked him to lead a Bible study just two weeks after his salvation. I wonder if we are making disciples or spiritual babies. No wonder some of us never get past Hebrews 5:14. If you have been believing that preaching and teaching is mainly the pastor’s job, you might need to repent before Christ for trusting mere men, not God the Holy Spirit.

While God has promised to give gifted and skillful men to His church to build it up (Eph 4:11-13) , every Christian is given the Holy Spirit so they can teach and build up their church family. 1 Cor 14:26 and Rom 15:14 are just two other verses that build this case further.

Have Marg churches become a community of crib-dwellers? Does the gospel makes us want to emulate Jesus who served us to death?

We can’t ask for mother’s milk at Barbeque Nation. You are called to eat solid food from the Bible. Even better, serve it to those you love.
