Sibling Apathy – Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Siblings just don’t know how to live with one another. At least, that’s what you would say if you tried to trace out the lives of most siblings in the Bible.

We see Cain murder Abel, Jacob tricking Esau and Joseph being sold into slavery by his own older brothers. Jesus’ biological brothers made fun of the very Son of God- we’re glad He did not zap them with thunderbolts in return. If you’ve had siblings, you would have had your (un)fair share of animosity, bruises and tears.

But sibling apathy is another matter. This less-intensive but destructive phenomenon is easily noticeable in adults.

How many families you know have had simmering sibling conflicts leading to decades of mutual indifference? Continue reading “Sibling Apathy – Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

Six Asinine New Year Resolutions for 2016

Donkey, asinine, new year, resolution, new year resolution, 2016, new year 2016, bucket list, John Piper, bible, Jesus, Marg, Tim Challies

Asinine means donkey-like. Stupid.

Come 2016 & at least those of us who are not too dejected have made our new year resolutions. Two weeks into the year, have you already felt the pinch of failure that has dented your confidence?

Donkey, asinine, new year, resolution, new year resolution, 2016, new year 2016, bucket list, John Piper, bible, Jesus, Marg, Tim Challies

Hopefully you have made reasonable resolutions.

Here’s a look at some common & uncommon resolutions that are dumb, because they’re unattainable. But it’s interesting how so many of us resolve to live and behave as if these resolutions are true and are goals that are totally worth it.

Get ready for some resolution bubble-bursting!

Resolution 1: “To land my dream job in 2016”.
In one sense, a lot of people will get jobs this year- by hook or crook- that they desperately wanted to be in. In that sense, yes, yes many will get their “dream jobs”. But to get there, we will have bought into the devil ‘s delusion that this new job will keep us permanently happy, will give us a sense of fulfillment each week, where we won’t feel like leaving- EVER!

What wishful thinking! Jobs were never designed to make us happy. in the first place. The last I remember, God in response to mankind’s rebellion cursed our first ancestor that he would work by the sweat of his brow to earn his bread (Gen 3:17-19). My sister and I were almost certain that Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry was real. We wished, even longed for Platform 9 and 3/4 to exist, for that solid wall to let us in to reveal a railway station that led to a world hidden to our muggle eyes and mysterious still.

As a teenager, I did not realize how engaging books in the Harry Potter series were. For the first time, I realized the depth and “realness” the author J K Rowling gave to Continue reading “How Every Movie Ever Made Is Connected to Christmas”

Mutilated Verses and Christian Wallpapers

Wallpapers, Christian wallpapers, cheesy, context, the true message, sorrow before joy, mutilated verses, Challies, Vivek Jones, Phil 4:13, Bad news before good news, Jesus, Jesus the God-man, Isaiah, Isaiah 43

Open my laptop and you will probably find a Christian wallpaper gracing the background.

That’s right – I am that clichéd guy who downloads clichéd wallpapers with encouraging Bible verses on them, accompanied by cheesy images.

If it’s “husbands, love your wives like Christ loved the church”, I am sure to have a glossy picture of a newly-wedded couple, holding hands, walking away on some boulevard.

If it’s “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, it’s the gritty image of an athlete sweating it out on the track.

If it’s “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”… you got it- sheep!
