Police Car Chases and Manmohan Singh’s Summons

Have you seen police car chase videos on TV?

Video cameras mounted in patrol cars and helicopters record stunning and sometimes saddening videos of offenders trying to escape the inevitable. Many get apprehended. Some drive to disastrous consequences.

Other cop chases have even lasted 1,000 kilometres.

The world we inhabit though. Some are never caught by human law. One look at our country’s judicial records could make veteran cynics out of us. But justice does not end with just cop cars and the court. I believe in divine justice. I believe in “ the offender will get what he deserves”, and that at the hands of a Divine Judge. Lev 19:15, Acts 17:31.

You see, Justice is not just an abstract property. It is a character trait.

And no character trait exist without a “character”, a Person.

Manmohan Singh and Manjunath
Two news articles reminded me recently that even justice on earth does catch up.

Supreme Court, India, justice, Indian Judiciary, my substitute, my sacrifice, Justified, ungodly, Manmohan Singh, Hindalgo, Aditya Birla Group, Manjunath, IOC, Indian Oil Corporation, Cop car chases, Patrol cars
Someday.. at your front door.

First, our former Prime Minister has been summoned as one of the accused in the coal block case for apparently favouring the Aditya Birla Group company Hindalgo. No one would even dream of “criminal conspiracy”  being linked to “Manmohan Singh”. May the truth prevail.

Second, the life term was given by the Supreme Court of India to six convicts involved in the 2005 murder of S. Manjunath, an Indian Oil Corporation manager. Manjunath became the face of the “government-job-honest-guy” who was brutally shot dead for cracking down on a fuel adulteration racket. The founders of an IIM alumni-based trust had this to say about their efforts to secure justice for the late Manjunath-

If you are not there, why would anybody else be there?

A lot of us probably want to live the common person’s life- an “Aam Aadmi”. And yet, most of us want to see justice done (At least when others are guilty). But if standing for justice causes repercussions, then we want to lay low. “Be practical”.

Honest – the two news articles though laudable, can’t always spur me to stick to justice. The next time I am asked to pay a bribe, will I refuse or will I give in to “save time”?

I will pay bribes until I comprehend the depths of God’s love and total control over all things.

Here is my God who fulfilled justice by punishing my sins in Jesus and showering mercy on such as me. This truth alone can fuel my love for Him who justifies “unjustifiables” like me, and free me from guilt and sin to do all that is right (Rom 5:6-8)!

Have you recently done something unjust? A small bribe? A juicy piece of gossip, a lie that “harmed” none?

The God of this cosmos does not need cop cars to catch up with our souls.

Run to Jesus Christ in the Bible for forgiveness and new life- the only realistic place (Rom 5:9) to find shelter and confidence.
