Jesus Our Inheritance

21st June 2021

Inheritance is the wealth parents leave for their children. The children neither work for it nor earn it as their right . It is because of the parents benevolence that they decide to make their children heir to all that they possess. One such beneficiary was C.T.Studd (1860 – 1931). Studd’s father, Edward Studd was a very wealthy man. He earned his wealth through his business in indigo plantations in India. Edward Studd had a Country house , a Town house in London and before his conversion owned several race horses and owned a private race course on his estate. C.T.Studd was one of the three sons of Edward Studd. C.T.Studd went as a missionary to China. He believed in living by faith and so did not receive any fixed monthly support from any organization.  When he and his wife were serving thus in China, his father Edward Studd died, leaving him an inheritance worth 29000 pounds.  C.T.Studd gave away the entire amount to various missions including 5000 pounds to George Mueller’s orphanage.

How could C.T.Studd do that ? Did C.T. Studd have a secret source that met all his needs ? Did C.T.Studd have a much greater inheritance in comparison to which, 29000 pounds just faded as insignificant ?

In the book of Joshua , we see Joshua casting lots to allocate the inheritance for the tribes of Israel in the land of Cannan. But to the Aaronic priests and to the Levites no inheritance was provided in terms of land. Why ?  We read in Num 18:20  And the LORD said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.”  And so we read in Jos 13:33  But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them. To the Levitical priesthood and to the Levites God was their inheritance.

The scripture tells us that Jesus has made us “a kingdom and priests to God the Father.” Rev 1:6. Again the scripture tells us in 1Pe 2:5  “you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1Pe 2:9  “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

How did we sinful, evil , corrupt and wicked people become the priests of an Almighty, Holy and Just God. The scripture says in Psa 5:4  You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell. If we cannot even dwell in His presence, how can we ever be priests of this Most Holy God. It is because of “Him (Jesus) who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,  and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father.” Rev 1:5-6 Not only has God made us His  holy and royal priests, God also has given us, Jesus, as our inheritance. Like the Levitical priests, Jesus is our portion and our inheritance. Jesus is all that we need. Jesus meets our every need according to His will. Jesus is our all in all. We find our satisfaction and contentment in Jesus. Jesus is that inheritance “that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you” 1Pet 1:4

It was because Jesus was C.T.Studd’s inheritance that he could give away his worldly inheritance.

Oh!! What incredible love !! Jesus not only has made us God’s royal priests but Jesus Himself is our inheritance.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night;
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart;
O King of glory, my treasure Thou art.

Here is a comparison of the house in which C.T.Studd grew up in London and the hut in which he spent his last 20 years in Africa.
